Our Mission

The mission of the High Country Breast Cancer Foundation is to support breast cancer patients, survivors, and their families in the High Country of North Carolina. While many wonderful organizations hold events locally, some of the money they raise in the High Country is usually taken out of our community and used elsewhere. We are an all-volunteer organization and 100% of the funds we raise remain in the community.

The funds we raise through events such as the High Country Breast Cancer Walk/Run are awarded as gifts to local women and men fighting breast cancer.

These gifts can be used for various activities to provide for the needs of survivors and their families. We want those facing breast cancer to know their community is fighting the fight with them.

Some of the many things our foundation can provide money for:

  • Child care during chemotherapy sessions
  • Wigs, hats, and other head gear for survivors with hair loss
  • Support classes for caregivers
  • Nutritional education
  • Therapeutic classes: yoga, music,
exercise, family equine therapy, aquatic exercise, lunch & learn
  • Career counseling and workshops (Our founder, Irene Sawyer, was fired from her job of 20 years when she became ill.)
  • Transportation to doctor, hospital, and counseling appointments
  • Support groups for survivors
